Chapter 21
Ten minutes later, they were all leaving. Jack was riding with Aspen again. He’d come to trust Aspen and enjoyed talking about the outlander post and things he’d learned about the old world from his books. Aspen was someone who loved to learn and he couldn’t get enough information about this unique friendship Jack had with Dave. After a while, even Jack grew tired of talking about Dave, so he changed the subject. This time, he really took Aspen by complete surprise.
“Do you know that Kastin warriors, the real warriors with the tattoos, aren’t really gifted by the gods? Someone put jojo blood in them. That’s why they’re are so mean and strong and get mad so easy.”
Aspen almost fell off his horse. “Jack, how do you know? Where did you hear that?”
“I hear a lot of things in the ceilings of the outlander post. Nobody knows I can crawl around up there and sometimes I hear things. I keep my books over a man’s office that talks about stuff like that all the time. He meets with someone from Kastin. That’s where the king sends the people they put the jojo blood in.”
“Do you mean King Christoph? Is he working with the Kastin too?”
“Yeah. The Kastin is a descendant, just like you, but he doesn’t want anyone in Kastin to know. They work with the DA in people’s blood.”
“Do you mean DNA?”
“Yeah, maybe. I’m not really sure, they talk about a lot of things I’ve never heard before.”
Jack looked up into Aspen’s eyes, debating on something.
“Jack, what else did you hear? You know you can trust me.”
Jack bit his lip, then motioned for Aspen to lean down so he could whisper. “They’re making an army and they’re gonna attack someone soon. They think the princess has weapons and they’re gonna hurt her to get them. That’s why me and Dave are protecting her. Dave won’t let that happen. I think that’s who attacked us yesterday. I think that man sent some of his army to get the princess.”
Jack leaned back and looked at Aspen with a pale face. “I’ve been really scared that they’d come after her, but Dave said not to tell anyone. Aspen, I know they made that thing that almost ate Emmy, too. They called them the unstable ones. They can’t fix them, so they just kill them or let them loose. I’ve seen one before. He tried to get me, but Dave killed him. I hate those things.”
Aspen couldn’t speak. Gods, now someone else knew about the weapons and this person was also creating dangerous human warriors. Who? And how could this be possible?
He didn’t know why any time capsule would have been designated to have anything to do with DNA, much less information on how to manipulate it. As far as he knew, he had the best medical time capsule there was. He knew a little about DNA and that they had done some experimentation with mutations in the old world, but that wouldn’t be something to salvage for starting over.
